Simmons College President Dr. Kevin Cosby speaks during a press conference announcing a new partnership with Jefferson County Public Schools to recruit minority teachers on July 8, 2019.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A new initiative between Jefferson County Public Schools and Simmons College to help produce more minority teachers.

Superintendent Marty Pollio said only 15% of the teaching staff in the district is African-American but 35% of the students are black.

The Teacher Recruitment Initiative will allow anyone with a bachelor’s degree or any student at Simmons College to apply for a one-year transition to teaching course.

Sharon Porter Robinson with the initiative says the program isn’t a silver bullet.

“The community must be involved, be aware and support this initiative – and we must learn to collaborate in a way that helps us produce the results that we say we want,” she said.

Beginning in August, those interested can visit the Simmons College website to sign up to be a student or volunteer.
