LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A student at a Jefferson County Public Schools high school is expected to survive after shooting themself in the parking lot of the school on Thursday.

According to JCPS officials, an Atherton High School student was found with a "self-inflicted gunshot" wound inside a car in the school's parking lot.

Atherton High School Principal Stephanie Fluhr sent out a letter to parents and families which said the the student "apparently accidentally" shot themself inside their car.

"To be clear, the gun never entered the building and there were no shots fired inside the school. Learning continued as usual inside our building though we did relocate a few classes as police investigated the incident. Counselors are available to talk to any students who feel they need support," the letter said.

JCPS officials said LMPD described the injury as "non-life-threatening" and they're expected to survive.
