LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A Jefferson County Public Schools substitute teacher has been suspended after being accused of assaulting a student.

Officials say the incident happened Monday at J.B. Atkinson Academy for Excellence located in the Portland neighborhood.

The teacher has been identified as teaching veteran Brenda Brown, who was a full-time teacher with the district from 1978 to 2008, according to JCPS Chief Communications and Community Relations Officer Helene Kramer.

Kramer says Brown began substituting for the district earlier this year.

According to witnesses, Brown allegedly assaulted a student and pushed another.

Principal Stephanie Nutter notified the district and contacted Child Protective Services. JCPS says they have the option of referring the case to the Louisville Metro Police Department's Crimes Against Children Unit.

JCPS says Brown's file shows no previous records for discipline.
