LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A new member has been appointed to the Jefferson County Board of Education.
After hearing from a handful of candidates, the Board announced during their Monday meeting that Gail Strange will fill the vacant District 1 seat.
Four candidates were interviewed for the position.
She replaces longtime board member and former chairwoman Diane Porter, who stepped down in late October to focus on her health.
Strange is a west Louisville resident and a graduate of Central High School. She has a background in communications with stints at Brown-Williamson and most recently served as director of communications at Presbyterian Church U.S.A. before retiring in November.
Strange told the JCPS Board that she wants to ensure District 1 constituents “have the best education experience possible” and her goal is to close the achievement gap for students of color.
“This was an opportunity for me to bring my talents to the children in this district,” she said.
Strange was sworn-in following the board meeting. Her first meeting on the board will be Jan. 23 with a public swearing-in taking place the following day.
She will hold the position until an election is held in November 2024.
District 1 covers much of West Louisville, downtown and Butchertown.
