LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) might not provide transportation for every student in the district next school year, according to district officials.

In a letter to parents sent Friday, the district said it can only guarantee transportation for special education students and students attending their "resides school."

A student's "reside school" is determined by the zone they live in throughout JCPS. To check which schools are in your student's zone, click here.

JCPS said the decision has not yet been finalized, saying the Jefferson County Board of Education will need to approve it when they vote on transportation options in 2024.

Until then, the district is warning parents that until the decision is finalized, it can't say if there will be transportation for students attending magnet schools or schools outside of their zone. JCPS said traditional schools are considered magnets.

"If your student is accepted into a magnet school or attends a school on transfer out of their zone and can no longer attend due to a change in JCPS-provided transportation, your student will be able to attend a school in their zone," the district said in the letter, adding the JCPS Application Period is open now through Dec. 22.

During a board meeting earlier this week, Superintendent Marty Pollio said the district's potential transportation options to reduce the amount of bus riders is to support the district's ongoing bus shortage.

JCPS parents can expect final recommendations in February regarding transportation next school year, Pollio said.
