Nearly 40 Central High medical magnet students receive white coats during ceremony

White coats are normally a rite of passage for medical students but are now a symbol of endless possibilities for those in Central's program.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Nearly 40 Central High School juniors are one step closer to pursuing a career in the medical field.

Central High School held a white coat ceremony on Sunday for students in the pre-medical magnet program.

White coats are normally a rite of passage for medical students but are now a symbol of endless possibilities for those in Central's program.

Through the program, students can shadow UofL doctors during their rounds at UofL Health – UofL Hospital, scrub into operating rooms and witness surgeries, and practice performing simpler procedures, like sutures.

“It’s looking at what they can be,” teacher Shantell Reed said. “Once they put on those white coats, they go into the hospital, the sky is the limit.”

Camaya Douglass, a junior, said the program is a steppingstone in her journey to become a doctor.
