Nelson County Schools closed Thursday after more than 200 staff members call out after protest

In a letter sent in by several parents, Nelson County Superintendent Wes Bradley said there were over 200 staffing vacancies reported across the district.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Nelson County Schools is canceled on Thursday.

In a letter sent in by several parents to WHAS11 News, Nelson County Superintendent Wes Bradley said there were over 200 staffing vacancies reported across the district tomorrow.

"In this case, we would not be able to safely and effectively deliver academic and operational experiences for students," Bradley said. "Our teachers and staff are the backbone of our educational system, and their well-being and concerns are of the utmost importance to us."

This comes just after the school board voted to move forward with a proposed merger of two high schools. Students and staff walked out of Thomas Nelson High Wednesday in protest.

“An idea of merging two high schools, there was always gonna be conversation about that on both sides—which is great," Thomas Nelson High School Principal Curt Merryfield said. "You just wanna make sure there’s going to be fidelity in the process, that all community members are being heard. My fear and my worry is that’s not the case right now. So I hope that will be the case soon."
