UofL recognizes graduates with virtual celebration

The virtual celebration Saturday is slated to start at 10 a.m. and lasts through the day with videos and well-wishes from some special guests.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Many high schools and colleges will celebrate the accomplishments of graduates in ceremonies later this year.

The University of Louisville has planned to honor the graduates in addition to those graduating in December.

But Saturday, the university is celebrating the fall 2020 graduates virtually.

May 9 was the day about 3,200 UofL graduates would be going to the Yum! Center for a big celebration.

The university still wanted to do something on the original date to honor students.

A virtual celebration will begin at 10 a.m.

The school surveyed students to find out how they would like to be honored as graduates.

Most students still wanted an in-person ceremony, but a number of them also wanted something online on the original day.

The school has several surprises planned for Saturday, including videos and well-wishes from some special guests.

“It’s important that we wanted every U of L graduate to know that they are appreciated that they are being welcomed into our alumni family and we wanted to make sure to have this celebration in honor of them,” Dean of Students, Michael Mardis said.

Social media is going to play a huge role in the celebration Saturday – people are encouraged to post online with the hashtag #UofLGrads2020 and share their UofL experience.
