'We know there's a real demand for technology right now': Western prepares to launch STEM magnet program

Magnet programs provide a themed learning environment, and any student who is accepted becomes a full-time student of that school.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — E-sports, drone operations and robots were the center of all the fun over at Western High School on Thursday.

Students got the chance to explore the new gadgets that will be part of the school's STEM magnet program. This was possible through a $1.4 million investment.

Magnet programs provide a themed learning environment, and any student who is accepted becomes a full-time student of that school according to the district's website. While some programs accept students from around the district, others only accept students from specific areas.

By next year, Western will become a full-time magnet school.

Students and staff were able to engage in a model classroom similar to what the school will look like next year.

"We know there's a real demand for technology right now," Superintendent Marty Pollio said. "Things like gaming systems and developments that drives kids passions, things that I don't know much about; but drones, virtual reality, computer programming, all of those things are on the cutting edge of what kids want to do. And its what we want to do with magnet schools, which is attract kids to these schools to do what they love to do everyday."

The school said this is just one part of a push to create more hands-on learning experiences for its students.
