Cirque du Soleil to bring bugs, energy and movement with OVO show at KFC Yum! Center

The high-energy and high-acrobatic production is a "colorful intrusion" of the daily lives of insects.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Cirque du Soleil is bringing its unique OVO show to Louisville with lots of energy and movement.

“OVO’s” story is based on a ladybug that captures the eye of an “awkward and unusual” insect that moves into a lively neighborhood and follows their journey of love.

“OVO means egg in Portuguese and the show’s creator is from Brazil – Deborah Cocker – she was always fascinated by bugs,” Janie Mallet with Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group described. “The 52 artists you’ll see on stage, they’re all insects. They’re crickets and scarums and butterflies, spiders – really friendly ones, but colorful, vibrant insects of Cirque du Soleil. We’re trying to get the characteristics of the insects and mix them with acrobatics.”

The nearly two-hour show will also feature clowns, aerial acts, aerial trapeze, silk rope, tumbling trampolines and everything in between.

“If you seen one of our shows, it’s a mix of very high-level acrobats and a massive stage production – video production [and] beautiful costumes.

Some of the intricate costumes you’ll see are amazing ants, a flexible dragonfly, crazy crickets along with a colorful ecosystem.

“We make all the costumes from scratch, and they're all made in Cirque du Soleil headquarters in Montreal, Canada,” Mallet said. “We start with white rolls of fabric. Sometimes, we print the fabric. We design with chemists, like the pigments [and] the color. Sometimes we create new textures with almonds or cabbage or anything that that we there's a lot of creation that happens.”

Cirque du Soleil travels with 100 crew members with many having 25 different nationalities including the 52 artists featured onstage.

They tour year-round and perform nearly 300 shows while training daily and adding new moves to make the show more exciting. Many are part of Olympic and world teams, providing a first-class performance. They invite you to come out to experience a unique show.

“I would say, don't waste this opportunity. The show cannot happen without you. We're all working to bring you this beautiful show, but the journey we take it together. So, we can't wait to have you in the seats,” Mallet said.

Cirque du Soleil’s OVO show runs from Sept. 5 through Sept. 8 at the KFC Yum! Center.
