(WHAS11) — Tony Moore, a Kentucky native and co-creator of the popular series "The Walking Dead," ripped into Gov. Matt Bevin after Bevin said America's “culture of death” is a likely reason for violence in our country.
"If he wants to talk about a culture of death, perhaps Governor Bevin should inspect his record on dialing back Medicaid expansion to thousands of vulnerable Kentuckians, or cutting worker safety regulations and union protections in the state, likely in response to the violations his own family’s bell factory incurred," Moore said in a blog post Thursday.
On conservative talk show host Leland Conway’s show, Bevin said dismissed outcries for gun reform, saying that new gun laws are not going to stop the violence, and instead said the issue of violence could be pointed back to Americans' obsession with death -- like "The Walking Dead."
Moore, a Kentucky Colonel, grew up in Cynthiana, and said he was particularly hurt by Bevin's comments.
In his blog post, he describes a childhood filled with video games, horror movies and metal rock -- a childhood he thanks his mother for letting him have despite other adults' fear of his fandom.
"Bevin’s words paint fandom as a degenerate sensibility, when I have only ever known kindness and generosity from them," Moore said.
Moore said that Bevin's commentary was the governor trotting out "tired old garbage position and accuse our creation of being the root of society’s problems."
"If Governor Bevin wants to point the finger at simple escapism, at stories that celebrate survival and hope, that celebrate LIFE, and denounce them as the cause of violence, perhaps he needs to have a good long look in the mirror to see what the face of a culture celebrating death truly looks like," Moore said.
