LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Health officials have said the best way to slow the spread of COVID-19 is by following social distancing guidelines. New data suggests that residents of Jefferson County may be suffering from social distancing fatigue.
Unacast, a Norwegian software company, created an interactive scoreboard that grades states and counties on how their residents are following social distancing guidelines recommended by health officials.
The company uses cell phone location data to track movements and scores on three metrics: how much people are traveling, how often they’re visiting non-essential venues and in-person interactions. Unacast says the metrics are updated daily.
Scaling for each of the three metrics is measured by the percent decrease, grading on an 'A' to 'F' scale.
Jefferson County has consistently graded at an 'F' since the beginning of Unacast's scoreboard data tracking. With the highest in each metric being a 'B' in average mobility on April 25 and 26 and an 'A' in visiting non-essential venues on April 12. In-person interactions has not received a grade higher than an 'F.'
Surrounding counties like Bullitt, Oldham and Shelby also currently have 'F' grades, according to Unacast. Kentucky as a whole holds an 'F.'
As of May 23, the city of Louisville has confirmed 2,249 positive cases of COVID-19, making up 26.2% of positive cases in the Commonwealth.
Phase 1 of Kentucky's reopening plan concludes Monday with the opening of cosmetology services like barbershops and salons, gatherings of 10 people are also permitted with social distancing in place.
While ahead of Kentucky in reopening, Indiana has also been given an 'F.' The state was once given a 'C' for its reduction in average mobility as recently as May 3, but has now risen as it entered Stage 3 of its reopening plans.
Groups of up to 100 people can now meet in Indiana under its new plans, and most businesses are open again.
Floyd, Clark, Jefferson, Scott and several other counties are currently at an 'F,' and none are above a 'C.'
