LOUISVILLE, Ky. — COVID-19 cases are surging across the country, according to the Center for Disease Control.
Along with new cases, emergency department visits, hospitalizations and deaths are seeing an uptick.
Levels of COVID-19 in Kentucky and Indiana remain low, but experts at UofL Health said that could change with thousands of students heading back to the classroom.
An infected student can interact and possibly infect dozens of other students over the course of a school day.
“It’s just the general interaction, especially with people being ill,” Dr. Mark Burns said. “If they’re not staying home, then they will be congregating and mixing with people. Unfortunately, if they’re contagious, then they will spread it on.”
To mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses, UofL Health is stressing that if your student is not feeling well, with a fever or persistent cough, keep them at home.
The CDC recommends wearing a mask and putting distance between people can help lower the risk of COVID-19 transmission.
They also recommend testing and getting treatment to reduce the risk of severe illness.
