Documents: Fired LMPD Detective Brett Hankison has interfered with SWAT operations before

The documents reveal new details about the SWAT operations Hankison was involved in, including the raid on Breonna Taylor's home.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In new court documents, federal investigators hope to show former Louisville Metro Police Detective Brett Hankison had a pattern of interfering with SWAT operations.

The documents reveal new details about the SWAT operations Hankison was involved in, including the raid on Breonna Taylor's home.

Hankison's actions in the raid on Taylor's apartment on March 13, 2020 got him fired. Now, he's facing a federal trial.

Federal prosecutors argued he shot blindly through Taylor's apartment window.

They said after the initial shots, Hankison ran out of Taylor's breezeway and fired 10 shows through two windows along that side of her home.

Those windows were covered by blinds and curtains according to photos from the scene. Investigators said those shots also went through her neighbors apartment wall where a child was sleeping.

Even though his first trial on federal charges was declared a mistrial, evidence presented during it shows that Hankison's shots allegedly came within several feet of where his fellow officers were standing in Taylor's doorway.

The re-trial starts in October.

In the new documents, prosecutors argued Hankison has two prior incidents they said put fellow officers and civilians at risk where he responded "aggressively and recklessly" and disregarded his training.

In 2016, Hankison was part of a narcotics investigation.

SWAT officers were on scene to make an arrest while Hankison and another narcotics detective were supposed to form a perimeter.

Court documents said Hankison did not join the perimeter, but instead drew his hand gun and ran between the suspect and SWAT who had their rifles drawn.

The alleged second incident happened in 2017, a few months later.

SWAT officers were performing an undercover operation at a barber shop on Dixie Highway according to the documents.

As SWAT officers were waiting for customers to leave, court documents said Hankison aggressively entered the scene and drove the wrong way down Dixie Highway.

Hankison allegedly had his gun pointed out of his window, blocked in a customer who was trying to leave and began yelling at them, blowing the SWAT teams' cover.
