LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Pandemic nightmares become a reality in some states that are seeing an increase in coronavirus cases causing hospital capacity to reach alarming levels as ICU and ventilator resources become scarce.
Tracking this from the start, our FOCUS team has good news, our community is not facing the same dire dangers of surpassing the health care capacity.
Let's check out how the data breaks down in Indiana.
The graph above charts the number of patients in the ICU since the beginning of April.
The blue line shows the percentage of ICU beds in use by coronavirus patients. It is on the steady decline which is a good sign.
Adding in other patients that don't have the virus but still need ICU treatment, the orange line shows the percentage of ICU beds available if cases should surge.
Right now, Hoosiers are safe with about 42% of ICU beds open.
In Kentucky, we don't have the same access to data.
After a reporting issue was discovered late in May we decided to leave that unreliable data out of the analysis.
Currently, there are 416 Kentuckians with coronavirus in the hospital. Those are the orange bars with today's data on the far right.
There are 61 patients in the ICU. You can see the change over time by looking at the blue bars with the dates along the bottom.
Unlike Indiana, we do not know how many patients without the virus are hospitalized but according to the Governor, there are more than a thousand ICU beds in the commonwealth.
For now, Kentucky is safely below the health care capacity.
We always like to mention this data is not a real-time reflection but we'll continue to keep a close eye out for any concerning signs.
