Louisville, Ky. (WHAS11) - All new information about a man prosecutors said was wrongfully convicted and then set free, but Louisville Metro police are still investigating the case.
Do police still suspect Kerry Porter as the real killer in a nearly 20 year old unsolved murder case? The I-Team reveals details from witnesses that raise questions about what's really going on.
It was 1996 when hard working truck driver Tyrone Camp was shot and killed at his job site in Louisville. Kerry Porter was arrested and convicted of the crime, but DNA helped to free Porter years later and the investigation continues into who killed Tyrone Camp.
"Do you believe that Kerry Porter is innocent?," asked WHAS 11's I-Team reporter Renee Murphy.
"Yes," said the witness. The witness is speaking only to the WHAS 11 I-Team and is giving these statements publicly for the first time. For the witness' safety, we are not revealing who the person is.
"I am here today because I am scared for someone that I love dearly (and their) life. It's been going on way too long for someone to live in fear for someone the police know is a dangerous man," the witness said.
This witness revealed the name of the person the witness said is the real killer, but that person hasn't been charged, so we are not releasing the name.
That person, though, is set to be released from prison soon on unrelated charges, and this witness said lives are in danger.
"Are you concerned about the safety of your loved ones?" asked Murphy.
"The safety of my loved one, the safety of myself and the safety of others involved, yes. There is already a hit list out there with people's names on it," the witness said.
This witness said that the witness has told police about the threats but question why no one has been charged.
"When someone knows where you live and comes to you and says, 'I was contracted to kill you.' That's pretty real."
Louisville Metro Police won't talk about this case because Porter is suing the city, but these court records obtained by the WHAS 11 I-Team reveal what authorities have said to lawyers in depositions.
Sgt. Donny Burbrink, who is investigating the Camp murder, agreed to dismiss a drug case for a witness if they would give information linking Kerry Porter to the murder of Camp. The documents show the deal was made after Porter was set free from prison.
That witness questioned by attorneys said in court documents that Burbrink told him he still fells like Kerry Porter committed the crime.
Court records further show Sgt. Burbrink wouldn't answer attorney's question about what theory he has about Porter possibly being linked to the murder.
Attorneys have now filed a motion with a federal judge to make Burbrink to answer the question.
As of right now, no one is charged in the murder Tyrone Camp.
