LOUISVILLE (WHAS11) -- Jewish Hospital announced they are voluntarily putting their heart transplant program on long-term inactivation as of August 17.
The hold on this program can extend up to 12 months. The program will have to be approved by the CMS and UNOS to be reactivated.
This hold only impacts heart transplants, it does not affect any other cardiovascular services the hospital.
Patients—including those on the waitlist, in evaluation and recently transplanted--will be assisted by the hospital in transferring their care to other transplant centers.
“Our goal is for this transition of care to be as seamless and expeditious as possible, minimizing stress and anxiety for our patients,” Dr. Ronald Waldridge, the president of Jewish Hospital, said in a statement.
According to the hospital, they have only conducted one heart transplant since January 1, 2019.
Heart transplant programs in the U.S. have to perform a minimum of 10 procedures during a 12-month period to remain compliant.
