LOUISVILLE, Ky. — For those who say hospitality is dead, there are several states who continue to pride themselves on how polite they are. In fact, Kentucky was recently ranked among the top ten most polite states in America.
Preply surveyed people across the country and found that Kentucky was the sixth most polite state in the United States.
Organizers of the survey said in order to determine in which states residents were the most polite, they asked a variety of questions gauging the importance placed on certain "polite" actions such as opening a door for someone, giving up your seat to someone in need, etc.
Respondents of the survey were also asked how often they compliment others, say "please" and "thank you" and more. The answers to these questions were used to determine each state's ranking.
The report listed the following statistics in regards to hospitality in Kentucky:
- Kentucky ranks #6 most polite state in the U.S.
- 75% of Kentucky residents agree that giving your seat to someone in need is important.
- 75% of residents agree that holding the door open for someone is important.
- 98% agree that cleaning up after yourself in public is important.
- 83% believe it’s important to be courteous to a driver.
The report claims based on its findings, "Southern hospitality is no myth," and it's easy to see why. Kentucky was one of eight states in the South among the top ten most polite states according to the survey.
Arkansas came in first place, Georgia got second place and Alabama rounded out the top three, according to the survey.
On the other end of the spectrum, Nevada was came in last place when it came to how polite its residents are. New Jersey was listed as the second least polite state and New York was ranked the third least polite state.
Kentucky's neighboring states were all over the place when it came to politeness in this survey. While Tennessee edged out Kentucky with a fifth-place ranking, Ohio came in 12th, West Virginia was ranked 15th, and Indiana was ranked the lowest among Kentucky's neighbors with a 32nd-place ranking.
