LOUISVILLE, Ky. — According to LMPD, Jefferson Square Park will be cleared out in the wake of a fatal shooting Saturday night that left one dead and another injured.
Police say, that while most protesters in the park have been largely peaceful, things changed last night when shots rang out.
Peaceful gatherings at Jefferson Square Park can continue during the day but they are not allowing people to stay overnight. Police say tents of any kind will not be allowed.
Christopher Wells has been camped out at Jefferson Square Park for a month with people who have become family.
“These are my brothers and sisters," Wells said. "I met them 30 days ago we love each other, we’ll get locked up together.”
His physical community has been taken away.
A team from Metro Public Works packed up the tents in the park and ensure all the belongings are secured so they can be returned to their owners. They will be available for pick up at 600 Meriwether Ave.
“We have been robbed,” Chaunda Lee said.
Lee has been cooking for people in the park for 21 days.
She says the protesters will be back.
“If we don’t sleep well stand up all night," Lee said. "There’s no curfew in the city no more so they can’t make us leave.”
Lee and Wells are now looking to regain what they lost, with the help of the public.
“We need donations, water, supplies, tables...we’re not going anywhere cause this is our city,” Wells said.
During the investigation, the park and the surrounding area had been completely cleared so detectives can conduct their investigation, LMPD says.
Investigators continue to work the homicide case. LMPD said updates will be provided as they are made available.
