Mayor asks for federal funding as Louisville faces deep budget cuts

The mayor said without help, they'll be forced to make “horrific” cuts to all departments and services.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Mayor Greg Fischer is calling on the federal government for funding as the city faces deep budget cuts.

The mayor said in less than three months, the city budget picture went from anticipating a $19 million surplus in the current fiscal year to a roughly $27 million deficit. It would only get worse next year.

Union leaders like John Stovall, who represents road crews and sanitation workers, said they need help.

“Our people have taken enough cuts over the years that we can't afford anymore. Now's the time for our federal government to stand up and help us, help the cities, and help the states that are doing without,” Stovall said.

The mayor said without help, they'll be forced to make “horrific” cuts to all departments and services, including public safety because it makes up about 60% of the budget.
