'Drive slow' during winter weather officials say

If staying home isn't an option, officials caution drivers to drive slow during winter weather.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — If snow or ice is in the forecast, there are things you can do to prepare before hitting the road.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet urges drivers to follow these tips:

  • Check tire tread and air pressure when tires are "cold" (haven't been driven on for at least three hours
  • Check fluid levels and heat, including no-freeze, antifreeze, the exhaust system and defrosters to make sure everything is full and functioning
  • Always keep your gas tank two-thirds full
  • Remove snow, ice or frost from all headlines, taillights, mirrors and windows before you leave

When you're on the road, Kentucky State Police Public Affairs Commander Paul Blanton said drivers should wear their seatbelts, drive slowly and leave room between other drivers to avoid spinning out or crashing.

If possible, stay home.

“I encourage Kentuckians to avoid any unnecessary travel when road and weather conditions are dangerous,” Blanton said. “If travel is necessary, I urge you to review road conditions before you leave, clear your windows and mirrors and be patient.”

He said drivers should always have a winter weather kit in their car, including a cell phone charger, blankets, first-aid kit, jumper cables, windshield scraper, collapsible shovel and a flashlight with batteries.

Blanton also said to avoid calling 911 for inquires about road conditions, instead, he said residents should check the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's website for more information and regular updates on road conditions.
