Republicans celebrate Mitch McConnell's legacy with expansion of headquarters

It's all a part of McConnell's legacy tour with speeches sounding different this summer on recess.

FRANKFORT, Ky. — The Republican headquarters in Kentucky, named after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, is expanding.

The "Mitch McConnell Building" bears the name of one senator who put Republicans on the map in Kentucky.

Both McConnell and political allies call the expansion a symbol of the growing Republican supermajority in Kentucky.

It's all a part of McConnell's legacy tour with speeches sounding different this summer on recess.

The senator's fingerprints remain all over the state, even with his time as the Senate Leader coming to an end.

"You see behind us, where the future of Kentucky lies," McConnell said. "I couldn't be prouder at this stage in my career to look at the Kentucky Republican Party today."

He's been touring Kentucky all summer, giving speeches unlike any in the past, talking about his legacy and his political rise in a once Democratic dominated Kentucky.

"That's how bleak the landscape was," McConnell said. "But I was determined to try to change all that. And it turned out to be a hell of a lot tougher than what I thought it was going to be."

He remembered going to the Fancy Farm political picnic in western Kentucky not long after being elected senator, knowing he was way outnumbered.

"On our side, it was me and our county chairman," McConnell said. "This year when you go down there, you can't find a Democrat with a flashlight."

McConnell will be stepping down from his Senate Minority Leader position in November, but he will be serving out his term until the end of 2026. He has not made a public decision about whether or not he will seek reelection, but his allies say don't count him out just yet.

"I don't think he's made a decision," said U.S. Rep. Andy Barr. "Don't ever underestimate Mitch McConnell."

"I think there's a chance that he may," said state Sen. Damon Thayer (R-17).
