'Separate the chuck and the truck from the real contractors': Kentucky bill aims to require licensing for roofers

Roofing expert James Reynolds hoped a new Kentucky bill would cut down on bad companies.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — With any kind of severe storms, roofs around Kentucky take a big hit.

According to the president of the Kentucky Roofing Contractors Association, in 2023 during the strongest wind storm, there was hundreds of millions of dollars in damage reported.

And Kentucky does not require any form of licensing according to the association.

The legal fight has continued into 2024, with one lawmaker filing a bill to address the issue.

Roofing expert James Reynolds hoped this would cut down on bad companies.

"We think this will separate the chuck and the truck from the real contractors carrying a high limit liability, carrying a high limit of workman's comp, and the biggest thing is the state will hold a bond," Reynolds said.

The bill did stall last session, but they hope to try again this year.
