Lockdown lifted at Campbellsville University after suspect arrested following student's death inside dorm room

University officials confirmed the arrest of 21-year-old Charles Escalera Saturday evening.

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — A lockdown at a Kentucky college campus has been lifted after the arrest of a suspect police said is connected to the death of a student inside their dorm room.

The all-clear was given at Campbellsville University after 21-year-old Charles Escalera was taken into custody.

Police said an arrest warrant for murder was issued for Escalera after 18-year-old Josiah Kilman was found unresponsive early Saturday.

Campbellsville Police were called to the campus around 12:43 a.m.

Kilman was transported to Taylor Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police have not released a cause of death.

It’s unclear how Kilman and Escalera know each other.

For hours police did not know the whereabouts of Escalera, and it led to a lockdown of the campus for several hours. It ended Saturday evening following Escalera's arrest.

Campbellsville University President, Dr. Joseph Hopkins, issued a statement following the death of Kilman:

"Campbellsville University is grieving the loss of one of our family. We have lost a student and our hearts are broken. During this devastating time, the continued safety of our students and the residents of our community are our primary concern. With consultation from local law enforcement, we will continue to implement every measure necessary to protect and support students and our community."

The student counseling center on campus is open and counselors are available to students if they would like someone to talk to. In addition, students are invited to pray together in the Ransdell Chapel.

Officials said all campus events and sports are cancelled for Saturday.

Kilman's body will be sent to the Kentucky Medical Examiner's Office in Louisville for an autopsy.

The investigation is ongoing.
