Student started 2 fires in residence hall at University of Kentucky, police investigating

It's unclear if the student has been charged.

The NCAA announced penalties Friday for the University of Kentucky football and swimming programs.

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The University of Kentucky is investigating after a student set two fires in a residence hall last week.

According to a letter sent to the UK community, the UK Police Department received a report on Jan. 19 that a fire was intentionally set by a student in a residence hall on Jan. 16 involving a roll of paper towels. 

"The fire was immediately extinguished in a sink by another student," UK said in a statement. "A similar incident occurred in the same residence hall the next day, Jan. 17, by the same student."

UK Police and the UK Fire Marshal’s Office are currently investigating this case.

It's unclear if the student has been charged. 

The identity of the student is currently unknown at this time.
