Workers at BlueOval SK battery maker want to join UAW

The $6.1 billion plant will add an estimated 5,000 jobs to Hardin County.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Workers at the electric battery plant in Glendale, Kentucky, have announced on Wednesday their intention to join the United Auto Workers (UAW) union.

The UAW said the majority of the workers signed union authorization cards. Workers at the plant said that "battery workers are autoworkers" and deserve "the good, safe union jobs" that other UAW members have.

The $6.1 billion plant will add an estimated 5,000 jobs to Hardin County.

Previously, Gov. Andy Beshear said the plant will not be unionized due to an agreement between Ford and the UAW.

Production at the plant is expected to start in 2025.

The BlueOval SK initiative, a joint venture between Ford Motor Company and SK On, is one of the biggest economic development projects in Kentucky's history.

Throughout construction, Elizabethtown, one of the fastest growing cities in Kentucky, has been preparing for continued population spikes in part due to this industrial base.
