Person found dead after house fire in California neighborhood, officials say

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — One person is dead after a house fire in the California neighborhood Sunday morning. 

Around 10:00 a.m., Louisville Fire Department crews were dispatched to a residential structure fire the 1600 block of W. Kentucky Street.

Firefighters on the scene found "heavy smoke" in the two-story building. There was a report of a possible rescue by a self-evacuated occupant, according to an LFD news release. 

Once firefighters made entry, LFD said they found fire on the first floor and the basement. It took 30 firefighters approximately 30 mins to gain control of the fire.

Initially, firefighters said their primary searches were negative, but on their secondary searches they found one person dead. 

No other injuries were reported from the incident. 

LFD Arson is investigating the cause of the fire. Officials said the coroner will determine the cause of death.
