2-alarm fire heavily damages apartment complex in Old Louisville

Officials with the Louisville Fire Department said it happened in the 900 block of South Brook Street. Heavy smoke could be seen as motorists traveled down I-65.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A two-alarm fire at an apartment complex in Old Louisville has left it heavily damaged.

Crews from the Louisville Fire Department arrived at Brook Court Apartments in the 900 block of South Brook Street just before 2:30 p.m. Monday.

The fire was first reported by a motorist traveling on I-65 as smoke could be seen hovering over the interstate.

When more than 50 firefighters arriving at the scene, heavy flames could be seen pouring out of the 12-unit apartment complex. Captain Donovan Sims said the second floor experienced a partial collapse.

It took more than an hour to get the fire under control.

Two people and a firefighter were checked out by EMS at the scene for minor injuries. No other injuries or rescues were reported.

The American Red Cross will help those impacted but the fire.

On Tuesday, the fire department officially canceled the fire watch on the blaze.

Louisville Metro Arson determined the fire was caused by "smoking material" in an ashtray on the 2nd floor.
