LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Thirty-one restaurants have closed in Louisville since the beginning of 2019.
In a foodie city that lives and breathes local restaurants does that number just sound high? Or is it concerning?
Well the co-owner of a new restaurant, Diamond Street Grub and Hops, says he isn't surprised about the large number.
"It doesn't shock me because it's a full time commitment," said Jared Matthews.
This new restaurant in St. Matthews took the spot of popular pizza joint, Mellow Mushroom. Since they closed not too long ago, we asked Jared if he was worried about the future of this new restaurant in the same spot.
As the owner of other restaurants in the same part of the city, he says he's far from worried.
"When I heard about this spot becoming available. I was like it's perfect," he said. "I think knowing the history of it, knowing that it really wasn't the restaurant. I think they had just opened another location that had kind of drained this," Matthews said.
He explains there are a few secrets to staying successful in this city.
"Honestly to tell you the truth, a very understanding wife is one of the big things and also people, having good people," he says.
And of course, chasing the course of current cuisine.
"I think in a lot of places you have to stay with the trends," Matthews said.
With long hours, and a physically rough business, he says it's not for everyone, but can be extremely rewarding in a city like Louisville.
The one thing he asks? To test your taste buds and dine in your district and for everyone to support local.
