LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – The construction site off of Bardstown Road in Mt. Washington is only occupied by a bulldozer and some piles of dirt, but the work in progress will soon be a place for addicts to progress in their recovery.
“For a long period of time, we were part of the problem in this town, and now we get to be part of the solution in a major,” said James Sweasy, one of the men behind the treatment center coming soon to Bullitt County.
It will be 25,000 square-feet and have 50 beds, ready to help 50 men and women in 2020.
“Down this area we have the detox unit,” he said pointing to the blueprints, “then people who have gone through the detox process already, they need their own area over here on the other side.”
Sweasy was born and raised in Bullitt County and is now celebrating 6 years of sobriety.
“To go from homeless, on the streets with nothing more than a backpack and no money in my pocket to standing here in my hometown to building this project to help people on this scale, it's unbelievable.”
It will be called the Robert Alexander Center for Recovery.
“It's named after our friend of ours, Alex, who passed away unfortunately, on his sobriety date, from an unrelated issue,” he explained.
Alex's father is the one leading the way on construction in honor of his son. It will be accessible to people 24/7 so addicts who need help quickly can receive it.
“You can call, send a message through social media or email and you can talk to someone 24 hours a day,” Sweasy said.
Sweasy hopes the facility will be open and ready to serve by September next year.
