54th annual World Championship Dainty Contest returns to Schnitzelburg

This tradition is loved and celebrated by many bringing together the community for a day of fun, competition, and community spirit.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — George Hauck Way was the place to be on Monday night for the 54th annual World Dainty Championship Contest.

Dainty is a sport that involved a broken broom handle, a small wooden dainty, and a 45-year age requirement.

This tradition is loved and celebrated by many bringing together the community for a day of fun, competition, and community spirit.

"This is just a celebration about the community and for the community. It's free and fun," Councilwoman and Dainty organizer Jennifer Chappell said.

Hours before the contest started, Chappell was helping set up for the hundreds of residents who would later flood the streets.

The game dainty was believed to have been brought to America by German immigrants in the 1800s and was revived by George Hauck and Charlie Vettiner in the 1970s.

The idea is to pop the dainty in the air and then hit it as far as you can using only one hand.

This year, the Dainty World Champion, Jason Lippa, hit the dainty 173-feet for a new world record.

"I enjoy having residents, young and old, woman and guys, in all walks of life, and experiences doing it," Jhom Jhym said. "It’s free so everyone should come down and enjoy."

The competition happened on George Hauck Way outside the old Hauck's handy store.

The street was blocked off and filled with onlookers, vendors and food trucks.

Many of those who participated in the event are from out of town.

Last year's winner was from Michigan and in town visiting friends.
