70-year-old New Albany woman hit, killed while crossing busy road

The incident happened about 7:30 Wednesday morning in dark and foggy conditions.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A southern Indiana woman was struck by a vehicle and killed Wednesday morning while crossing Charlestown Road.

According to Indiana State Police, 70-year-old Barbara Tucker was hit by a vehicle about 7:30 a.m. just north of Klerner Lane. The crash scene was "dark and shrouded in fog" at the time of the incident, which reduced visibility.

Police also say the collision happened "well outside" the nearest marked pedestrian crossing.

Tucker was rushed to University Hospital where she died shortly after arrival.

The New Albany Police Department requested assistance of crash reconstruction officers from the Sellersburg ISP post, who responded to the scene to investigate. Officers interviewed witnesses and reviewed video evidence.

Officers believe the driver of a 2017 Chevrolet Equinox did not see the victim as she crossed the road due to the dark and foggy conditions. Speed is not believed to be a factor and charges are not expected to be filed.
