LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development finds there are more than 32,000 homeless veterans nationwide.

To help them out, a Louisville student is making her mission to provide hundreds of warm outerwear kits to homeless veterans from coast to coast through her organization, Sargeant's Army.

Ashley Nevison, 17, and a tram of volunteers from the community worked to prepare the kits.

The kits include outerwear like a jacket, scarf, as well as hygiene bags and a thank you card.

The organization said they hope to donate 800 outerwear kits to veterans in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

“We have reached a lot of sponsors, and they gave us a lot of money which we are very grateful for, and we were able to purchase it all and then have all of our volunteers pack it,” Nevison said.

Nevison said she hopes to keep expanding the drive every year and one day hit a goal of 50,000 outerwear kits distributed to veterans.
