Academy at Shawnee discusses concerns about next school year

"We're struggling, we're drowning, we have 21 vacancies right now. And it's going to be even less next year."

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — On Wednesday, community leaders met at the Academy at Shawnee to discuss the future of the school with district wide transportation changes and new start times.

Transportation at the school is expected to remain the same; however, the school anticipates more students will enroll because of cuts to magnet school transportation.

School leaders heard from the community about their concerns as they look to next year.

"We have already doubled our student body from last year to this year; and so next year, we're going to have even more students, but the problem is that we're going to have even less adults," educator Jaime Whitaker said. "We're struggling, we're drowning, we have 21 vacancies right now. And it's going to be even less next year."

The transfer window is currently open to change schools.

Families of students who will no longer have school bus transportation should have gotten a survey link.

That survey will let Jefferson County Public School officials know what their transportation plans will be.

The district also created a website to help family, staff and students get updates.
