ANCHORAGE, Ky. — Anchorage Middletown Fire and EMS is saying goodbye to Chief Kevin Groody as he retired Sunday after nearly three decades of service.
Groody began his career in 1976 at the American Hose Company in Ashland, Pennsylvania. In 1997, he joined the Worthington Fire Department.
"He ascended the ranks through unwavering resolve, culminating in his promotion to Major in January 2005," a news release about Groody's retirement said.
Groody also graduated from the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program in 2013.
He became the interim chief for Worthington Fire in October 2012 and the position was made permanent in January a year later.
"His tenure as Chief was marked by his dedication to professionalism, innovation, and the community's safety and well-being," the release said.
After the merger of Worthington Fire Department with Anchorage Middletown's department in 2019, Groody continued as the executive assistant chief before assuming the position of fire chief in 2020.
"Throughout his illustrious 27-year career, Chief Groody's commitment has left an enduring impact on the citizens of Jefferson County and Louisville Metro," the release said. "His exceptional leadership, integrity, and unwavering devotion to duty have set a benchmark of excellence within the firefighting profession."
His last day of service with the fire department was on Sunday.
"The Anchorage Middletown Fire & EMS Department extends heartfelt gratitude and best wishes to Chief Groody as he embarks on a well-deserved retirement," the release said.
