LOUISVILLE (WHAS11) -- Another barge has sunk on the Ohio River after a tug hit the Clark Memorial Bridge on Christmas Day.
That tug was pushing 15 barges loaded with coal. The crash caused those barges to break free.
Crews recovered six of them, but nine are still lying on the McAlpine Dam.
The Coast Guard said water at the dam rose over the last two days, causing another of those barges to sink. The total number of sunken barges is now seven.
The Coast Guard and Army Corps of Engineers are working to bring in salvage teams to raise the barges. They will be using cranes to lift the barges from the river. That process could begin as early as next week.
