LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Ballardsville firefighter is being remembered after he died in the line of duty.
Sgt. Thomas Petschke Jr., 53, died Saturday after responding to a fire in Goshen.
He suffered a medical emergency while responding to that fire.
Petschke was given medical attention immediately at the scene, then taken to an area hospital where he later died.
On Sunday, the Ballardsville Fire Department honored his legacy.
Petschke had been a firefighter with the department for 10 years.
He was described as a hardworking entrepreneur, owning Industrial Turnkey Solutions in La Grange and a servant to the Oldham County community.
A procession made its way from La Grange Road to a funeral home in Old Louisville where fellow first responders and law enforcement brothers and sisters showed respect.
“He was an example of a volunteer firefighter, always trying to expand his knowledge and serve the community the best way he could,” Chief Steven Fante said.
A cause of death has not yet been released. Petschke was originally from the Buffalo area.
Anchorage Middletown Fire is helping the small department during their difficult time.
