LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville city leaders say they will announce "concrete steps" they plan to take to address gun violence following the influx of deadly shootings, seen across the metro this weekend.
The last of which, took the life of a 21-year-old following a shooting at a Bardstown Road business, early Sunday morning.
The incident took place at Café 360 in the 1500 block of Bardstown Road around 3:30 a.m., according to Metro Police.
Police said they responded to the location after receiving multiple phone calls about a man down inside of the business.
The victim, identified as Theodore Brown by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting marked Louisville's fifth in the span of less than 24-hours. In all, four people have died and four have been injured in incidents taking place across the city, between Saturday around 7 a.m. and Sunday around 3:30 a.m.
Metro Councilman Ben Reno-Weber, (D-District 8), who represents two of the areas affected by this weekend's gun violence, shared the following statement with WHAS11 News on Sunday:
"The senseless and tragic shootings in the Highlands and Bon Air, as well as those devastating families and neighborhoods across Louisville, only add to the urgency of our efforts to keep our city safe from gun violence. (Monday) we will be announcing some concrete steps we are taking to help prevent these violent incidents."
Last spring Reno-Weber, along with other city officials, spearheaded plans to improve security and training within Highlands businesses following a string of violent incidents.
Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg shared the following statement with WHAS11 News Sunday:
"Every loss of life is a tragedy and the acts of violence this weekend are unacceptable. We are working with urgency to make our city safer, with homicides down this year in comparison to 2023 — but this weekend shows why we must keep working. From advocating for legislation like (House Bill) 696 which would require a five-day waiting period from purchase to possession of a firearm to securing more funding for our local police and more, we need more resources to strengthen our efforts to reduce violent crime in Louisville.
We ask for the public’s help to provide information to LMPD’s anonymous tip line at 574-LMPD to identify the perpetrators in these - and other - gun crimes. We must hold everyone accountable who commits acts of gun violence."
HB 696 sponsor Rep. Daniel Grossberg, D-Louisville, introduced the legislation in the House on Feb. 26. It has yet to be assigned to a committee.
Police are asking anyone who may have been at Cafe 360 or in the area at the time of the incident to give them a call on their Tip Line at (502) 574-LMPD or use their online Crime Tip Portal.
The Homicide Unit is handling the investigation.
