LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Emotional victim impact statements were heard Tuesday in the sentencing of Barry Sowders. He pleaded guilty to shooting a New Albany police officer and trying to shoot a woman in May 2023.
Officers were dispatched on reports of a woman being shot at, and tracked Sowders to a neighborhood near 14th and Market Streets. Police chased Sowders, who then fired on police and hit Cpl. Andrew Byrne.
Byrne shot back at Sowders and hit him. Both were taken to the hospital and survived.
Sowders is charged with attempted murder and resisting law enforcement. He will spend the next 55 years behind bars.
