LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Since rental scams have become more prevalent, the Better Business Bureau has compiled a list of scam tips and warning signs for potential renters:

Research rental companies before putting down a deposit. BBB Business Reviews provide contact information and a rating.

Never wire money or use a prepaid debit card to pay for a deposit or rent. Once the money has been sent, there is no way to get it back.

Never send money overseas. Some scammers will claim to be out of the country.

Never pay a fee upfront. Make sure you see the property in person and never send money to someone you have not met.

If the “deal” sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Watch out for low rent and great amenities that are not being offered by similar properties.

Search other cities for the same ad.
