Louisville organizations seeking community donations to help homeless as bitter cold arrives

Inflation has affected the amount of supplies Hope Village and Forgotten Louisville can provide, so they are turning to the community for support.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — With bitter cold expected to hit the Louisville area, caring for those who are houseless is a top priority and area organizations say the need for donations are on the rise.

Louisville’s Hope Village continues to provide those in need with shelter and a warm place to stay. There is also Forgotten Louisville, another organization that makes it a weekly goal to pass out supplies.

Inflation has affected the amount of supplies they can provide, so they are turning to the community for support.

Angel Todd, director of operations at Hope Village said, "So as we go into the winter as far as supplies that we need is the norm that many people automatically think of, things to keep us warm so gloves could really use diabetic socks."

It has been eight months since the organization launched making this the first winter that people will experience living in their shelters. In order to keep supplying consistent resources they are depending on the public.

Meanwhile Forgotten Louisville makes it a weekly goal to pass out care packages but during the colder months they canvass areas where people are sleeping daily.

"We had years where we lose some of our friends to the frigid temperatures on the streets. So when were out and about it is really lifesaving efforts, we're making sure that if they want to go into shelter, we're going to transport them to shelter. If they choose to stay outside, we're going to make sure we have the supplies they need to sustain through that next 24 hours," Forgotten Louisville founder Tiny Herron said.

Both organizations said they need blankets, gloves, hand warmers, food, diabetic socks, hats and long johns.

Those interested in helping, you are asked to drop off donations to Hope Louisville at 212 East College Street.
