BULLITT COUNTY, Ky. — The grief in Bullitt County is apparent: from the dozens of strangers wiping away tears, to family members left absolutely shattered.
In the face of such tragic loss, the community came together, Sunday, to honor the lives of Maurice, 6, and Jayden, 9.
According to police, on Wednesday, their mother, 32-year-old Tiffanie Lucas, shot and killed her sons. She faces two counts of murder. On Thursday, a judge set her bond at $2 million.
She is expected back in court this week.
"A lot of times you hear [about it] on television but there's no outlet, no place to go as a community," Kristina Simms, a vigil organizer said. "Its just gut wrenching to sit there and think about and you're like 'How could this happen?' and 'How can we make that better and more positive?'"
As half a dozen first responder vehicles parked in the Little Flock Baptist Church parking lot ahead of the vigil, so did the boys' bus they rode to school in, driven by Londa Boggs.
"They're your bus babies. And you want to protect them as soon as you get them," Boggs said. "Hopefully we'll find peace -- peace and a good memory and say 'Let the lord's will be done in this situation, not just for us but for the community itself.'"
Boggs explained the moment when she was told the two boys had passed.
"I lost it. I'll be honest with you. I cried really hard," she said. "They were such sweet babies. Nobody deserves that. Nobody deserves to die like that."
"We can make the change, so that situations like this don't get kicked down the road, like a can," one pastor, speaking at the event said. "That real resources and solutions can be offered to help."
"Just knowing and realizing that could've been my boys -- it's just something that's gut wrenching. And everybody felt that way that we talked to," Simms said.
