Company invests $800 million to build solar cell manufacturing facility in southern Indiana

Officials are calling it a "historic investment."

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — An Ontario-based solar company plans to build an $800 million manufacturing facility in southern Indiana.

On Monday, the company, Canadian Solar, announced it's building the new facility at the River Ridge Commerce Center in Jeffersonville. The facility will manufacture 5 GW Solar PV cells.

Jerry Acy, executive director of the River Ridge Development Authority, said this is a "historic investment" the center and southern Indiana. Jeffersonville Mayor Mike Moore echoed those sentiments.

"Not only are they making a large financial investment into our community, but they will also become one of the largest single-site employers in the Greater Louisville region," Moore said.

It's projected the facility will create roughly 1,200 skilled high-tech jobs once production kicks off.

According to a news release, the cells built at the Jeffersonville facility will be used at a 5 GW module assembly plant in Mesquite, Texas.

"Establishing this factory is a key milestone that will enable us to better serve our U.S. customers with the most advanced technology in the industry," Thomas Koerner, senior vice president of Canadian Solar, said.

The facility is expected to have an annual output of 5 GW, equal to roughly 20,000 high-power modules per day, officials said.

Production is expected to begin by the end of 2025.
