Portland neighborhood woman left to rebuild after a car crashes into home, causes fire

A Sunday car crash escalated to a home being deemed a total loss.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A woman who has lived her whole life in the Portland neighborhood, is now left rebuilding after a car crashed into her apartment building Sunday.

Jeanette Mullins has lived in a two-story apartment building on Main St. near North 24th for two years.

On Sunday, a car crashed into the house, striking the gas meter and causing an explosion at the home.

Mullins told WHAS11 she was in her bedroom Sunday afternoon when she felt the house shake and saw flames through the window.

"Everybody was screaming," she said. "It was just chaos everywhere."

That's when Mullins and her neighbors started to hear popping, and then the gas meter exploded.

The home is considered a total loss. The inside of the home is barely recognizable among the rubble.

"I just lost my whole life," Mullins said. "I just lost everything I know, it's all gone."

She was only able to salvage a few items of clothing, her son's baby photos and her mother's funeral candle.

"I have one pair of shoes when I had 30 pairs of shoes and eight coats – now I don't have any of that. Nothing," Mullins said.

She said this is the second car that has hit the apartment building, describing the intersection as dangerous.

"It happens all the time, there are so many wrecks right here," Mullins said.

It took 25 firefighters to get the fire under control. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

"I'm just glad I'm alive – blessed I guess in that category," Mullins said. "I made it out safe, I'm alive, and I'm here."

She is staying with friends and family while she tries to rebuild her home.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help Mullins.
