3-year-old rescued in Carrollton house fire; Officials believe 'multiple fatalities' possible

Carrollton Police believe the fire may have killed multiple people who lived inside the home.

CARROLLTON, Ky. — A 3-year-old girl was rescued from a burning home in downtown Carrollton early Thursday morning.

The house fire was reported around 6 a.m. in the 200 block of 5th Street.

First responders arrived on scene in under ten minutes and found the house engulfed in flames.

Carrollton Police Det. Dave Roberts said the young girl was found at the back door. She was taken to the Carroll County Memorial Hospital, but has since been airlifted to a Louisville hospital.

Authorities believe the fire may have killed multiple people who lived inside the home, however crews have been unable to enter as the flames are still hot. Police said it's unlikely the child was home alone.

The two-story building, now collapsed and reduced to ash, was still smoldering Thursday afternoon.

Exhausted from the hours-long battle, a joint crew of firefighters from Carrollton Fire and Westside Volunteer Fire kept dosing out the remaining flames.

A landlord across the street, and father himself, Quinton Featherstone said he feels for the family's loss.

"Definitely makes, you know, a reason to hug your kids and wife everyday before you leave," he added.

A brother of the mother who owned the house told WHAS11 she was killed in the fire.

He said she worked at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, where a community vigil is planned at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Carrollton Police, with the help of Kentucky State Police arson investigators and the State Fire Marshall's Office, are looking into the cause of the fire.

City officials advised the public to avoid 200 block of 5th Street as the road will remain closed for "several hours."

"It was a terrible loss for this community. The structure, the family, we're just praying the child is OK," Roberts said. "Once this house cools down a little bit and we continue our investigation, we'll see what we have inside the residence."

WHAS11 has sent a crew to the scene in Carrollton, Kentucky.
