Metro Public Works offers three Christmas tree drop-off sites; What to know

Here's what you need to know.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Now that the holidays are over, many people in Louisville are asking themselves when's the right time to take down their tree and what to do with it?

If you have a live tree, Metro Public Works is offering three Christmas tree drop-off sites for all Louisville residents starting Tuesday, Dec. 26.

All ornaments and lights need to be removed from the tree when dropping it off.

Hours and Locations:

  • East District Recycling Center (595 N. Hubbards Lane)
  • Public Works Yard (10500 Lower River Road, enter from Bethany Lane)
  • Waste Reduction Center (636 Meriwether Avenue)

Tree drop off is available Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. between Dec. 26, 2023 and Jan. 27, 2024.

NOTE: The Waste Reduction Center closes at 3 p.m. on Saturdays. All locations will be closed on Dec. 30 and Jan. 13 in observation of New Year's Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

According to city officials, the Hubbards Lane site can instantly recycle trees into mulch for free. Residents only need to bring an appropriate container for the mulch and can use it for their home.

Metro Public Works will also provide curbside pickup of Christmas trees within the Urban Services District. Anyone with private waste haulers will need to check with them to see if and when tree pickup is available.

Those with city yard waste collection can put out their Christmas trees and greenery outside on their regular collection day, officials said. Remember, trees can't be in plastic and all decorations must be removed!
