Former trucker watches from Indiana as crews rescue trapped semi driver hanging over Louisville bridge

With 23 years of experience, John Harris Jr. has never seen a crash like this before.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Sysco truck, anchored by its refrigerated trailer, hung over the Ohio River after a serous crash on the Clark Memorial Bridge on Friday.

John Harris Jr. captured the scene from a riverbank in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Harris is a former truck driver turned photographer. With 23 years of experience, he said he’s seen a lot of things, but nothing like this.

“I never saw anything like this before,” he said. “I mean, I’ve jackknifed before, but never to the point where I would lose control of the truck and roll over or dangle off a bridge.”

Dozens of people crowded the waterfront on both sides of the Ohio River. Many took pictures on their phones to memorialize the shocking moment while others left with lessons themselves.

"Man, I'm gonna drive extra slow," Jay Cruz said, "I hope everybody drives extra slow out there. Anything could happen, a simple mistake. I'll be extra careful when I cross the bridge for sure."

And as for the driver of the semi-truck, boldly rescued by Louisville Fire, Harris is confident she’ll ride again. "She'll be fine," he said, "it's gonna take a little bit to get over it. But you learn from the experience and keep on truckin'."

The Clark Memorial Bridge will remain shut down for an unknown period as Kentucky Transportation Cabinet crews continue to assess damage to the bridge structure.
