CLARKSVILLE, Ind. — Clarksville's Historic Preservation Commission is looking to save a historic town landmark that's been around since the late 1800s.
On Friday, the commission launched a community fundraiser to restore the old GRC Bell Tower and move it to the city's Heritage Trail in Colgate Park. The goal is to raise $27,500 to receive matching funds from the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority.
The bell tower was constructed in 1899 as part of the George Rogers Clark (GRC) Elementary School. It was designed in a classic style of the time and featured a bell tower above the entrance.
In 1975, the school was remodeled and the gymnasium was demolished, but the bell tower remained on the lawn as a reminder of the old school.
"After 50 years of wear, the Bell Tower is no in significant disrepair," the commission said. "At the new location [in Colgate Park], the bell tower will again become an icon to Clarksville's outstanding educational system, offer a gathering place and a monument to the history of south Clarksville."
The bell tower will be restored atop a new brick base making it roughly 26-feet tall. A concrete plaza, landscaping and benches will also be constructed around the landmark.
Any additional funds raised will go toward enhancing the site, officials said.
