LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) - The community bid a final farewell to former Jefferson County Court judge Benjamin Shobe Monday morning.

Shobe, who was the first African-American Chief Justice of the Jefferson County Court, died Feb. 5th at the age of 95.

Shobe, a Kentucky native, attended and received his law degree from the University of Michigan. He had wished to attend University of Kentucky or University of Louisville, but neither school accepted black students at that time.

Later in his life, he would work with U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Thurgood Marshall to integrate the University of Kentucky.

His funeral was held Monday morning at the Portland Memorial Baptist Church, where he was a deacon.
