Construction crews install last beam on JCTC's science building in downtown Louisville

The college held a “topping off” ceremony on Monday as construction crews placed the final steel beam on the new science building.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Jefferson Community & Technical College marked a milestone in its $90 million revitalization project.

The college held a “topping off” ceremony on Monday as construction crews placed the final steel beam on the new science building that included signatures from JCTC employees, board members and Mayor Craig Greenberg.

The 37,000-square-foot science building will have state-of-the-art labs, classrooms for astronomy, physics, biology, chemistry and geology. Also included are several collaboration and study zones.

This also includes a new greenspace and a parking garage that will be located to West Broadway between South First and Second Streets.

After completion, JCTC believes their reimagined campus will reshape the entrance to downtown Louisville, entering from I-65 at Broadway.

“This event demonstrates Jefferson’s significant commitment to transforming the student and visitor experience on our flagship campus and raising the community to new heights through equitable downtown redevelopment,” President Ty Handy said in a statement.

The addition to this project will serve as the anchor for the Louisville Medical & Education District (LOUMED) which is a partnership between JCTC, UofL's Health Sciences Center, UofL Health and Norton Healthcare.
